History of Tripura: The Formation

The history of Tripura dates back to the 3rd century B.C. Tripura was a princely state and it has been under the rule of various dynasties, Mughal Sultanate and British rule. The Bir Chandra Manikya of the Manikya Dynasty was one of the most prominent rulers of the Tripura civilization.

The word ‘Tripura’ in Sanskrit means ‘three cities’ but the origin of the state’s name is doubtful. It is also believed that the nearness of the state to the Bay of Bengal during the reign of rulers of the Twipra Kingdom rendered to its name. The Tripura became a constituent state of Indian union on 21st of January, 1972.

The state spreads across an area of 10,491.69km² and is divided into 8 tehsils that are further divided into numerous cities, villages and towns.
