Rudraprayag History

The word Rudraprayag is believed to have been derived from Rudra, which is a Sanskrit word and an aspect of Lord Shiva, so basically the place is named after Lord Shiva. Initially, Rudraprayag district was a part of three separate regions namely Pauri, Chamoli and Tehri. Later, on the 16th of September in 1997, Rudraprayag was established as a separate district and was carved out of the Kedarnath valley alongside with parts of Tehri and Pauri districts.   • Chamunda Devi Temple: This temple is also located at the joining of the two sacred rivers. Chamunda is worshipped as a wife of Lord Shiva.
  • Vasuki Tal: It is located at distance of 6kms at the Gangotri National Park in Taknaur Range. The presence of crystal clear lake that overlooked by ancient mountains forms an excellent view.   • Trijuginarayan: This place is situated at a distance of 12 Kms from son Prayag. As per the epics, Lord Shiva and Parvati’s marriage ceremony was held at this very location.   • Barsu Village: Erie ambience and multiple of ghostly rumours, this village is situated Ukhimath tehsil of the Rudraprayag. It is situated at a distance of 50km away from the district headquarter, Rudraprayag. The village is popularly known as the ‘ghost town’ since the massive displacement of people due to lack of basic and proper amenities.   • Nagpanchmi: A day celebrated for thanking the Nagas or serpent gods, Nagpanchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Sravana. The Nagas are offered milk and figures of snake are made.
